Intikane camp attack

Thousands of refugees fled Intikane camp in western Niger after a deadly coordinated attack by jihadists. At least three people were killed in the attack, which was coordinated by about 50 fighters on motorbikes, according to Al Jazeera.

Intikane camp hosts thousands of Malian refugees who fled the north of Mali after January 2012, as several Tuareg insurgent groups began a fighting campaign against the Malian government calling for autonomy for northern Mali, an area called by the insurgents “Azawad”.

Niger, a country of 22,4 million people, located in the heart of the Sahel region and bordered by Libya, Chad, Nigeria, Benin, Mali, Burkina Faso and Algeria, is home to nearly 60,000 Malian refugees. 

Besides, there are 265.222 internally displaced people in Niger, according to the UN Refugee Agency (May 2020), they are people who fled their regions due to security incidents in the border areas with Burkina Faso, Mali and north-east Nigeria.
